There’s no single “best” grader — there’s the one that gets your specific card the highest sale price after fees. Here’s how the three biggest names compare in practice.
PSA
The most recognized name, with the deepest market. For most modern and vintage cards, a PSA holder tends to sell fastest and command the broadest buyer pool. That liquidity is why many people default to it.
BGS (Beckett)
Known for sub-grades (separate scores for centering, corners, edges, surface) and the coveted Black Label 10. Popular with modern, high-end, and chrome/parallel cards where a pristine copy can command a premium.
SGC
Respected especially in vintage, with a clean tuxedo-style holder and often faster turnaround. Vintage buyers frequently treat SGC and PSA as close substitutes.
How to actually choose
Pick the grader whose holders sell highest for that exact card. The way to know is to compare recent sold prices by grader, not opinions. Breakeven looks at graded comps so you can see which holder the market rewards before you commit.
